すべての元素単體の中でもっとも融點(diǎn)が高い金屬元素。遷移元素のひとつ。
ウォルフラムともいう。1781年にスウェーデンの化學(xué)者シェーレが発見(jiàn)したという説と、1783年にスペインのエルヤール兄弟が発見(jiàn)したという説がある。英語(yǔ)名は重い石を意味するスウェーデン語(yǔ)tungsten、ドイツ語(yǔ)名のウォルフラムはスズ鉱に混在して悪役視されたことからオオカミのだす不潔なものを意味するWolfrhahmに由來(lái)する。純粋なタングステンは銀白色で延性がある。粗製の不純形は鉄灰色でかたく、もろい。
天然には単體として存在せず、他の金屬と化合し、主要なタングステン鉱石である灰重石(かいじゅうせき)や鉄マンガン重石などの鉱物として産出する。おもな産出國(guó)は中國(guó)、韓國(guó)、アメリカ合衆(zhòng)國(guó)、ボリビア、オーストラリアなど。
灰重石は塩酸で分解し、鉄マンガン重石は水酸化ナトリウムと融解して、タングステン酸ナトリウムNa2WO4をえて、酸化タングステンWO3にかえたのち、電気爐で水素還元(→ 還元)する。こうしてえられた微粉末を型にいれて水素気流中でふたたび加熱し、加圧してインゴットにする。
タングステンのおもな用途は白熱電球(→ 電気照明)のフィラメント、かたくて靱性(じんせい)のある鋼合金の製造である。各種電極、電気接點(diǎn)、切削工具の製造や、X線管のターゲットとしてももちいられる。
元素記號(hào)W(ドイツ語(yǔ)系の呼び名ウォルフラムの頭文字)。原子番號(hào)74。原子量183.84。地殻中の存在量は約1.2ppm。安定同位體の質(zhì)量數(shù)と存在比は184(30.64%)、186(28.64%)、182(26.31%)、183(14.28%)、180(0.126%)。周期表の6族に屬する。密度19.3g/cm³(20°C)。融點(diǎn)約3407°C。沸點(diǎn)約5700°C。
